The Mighty Mouse:
For years, my gamer friends have teased me. My designer friends have mocked me. Even more, my programmer friends have ridiculed me. Why? Why say I, why would they do this to a friend? All in the name of Microsoft! Ohh, those poor brainwashed souls. :(
This my friends is why I love Apple. Apple is a company that to me takes pride in what they do. Yeah, so Microsoft came out with the 2-button mouse and it IS great. Apple has been putting out 1-button mice forever and I’m sick of it. However, today is not the case anymore. Check out the Mighty Mouse. The Mighty Mouse for mice is what iPods did for mp3 players. Perfect form and function minimalism. It is beautiful, yet appears to be very functional.
Remember when Dad had to ask you how to help him out with his universal remote because it was too dang confusing? Remember all of those buttons scattered all about? Its like the manufacturers never put into thought how the users would be using it. Products should not be designed this way, in fact they should be designed according to Chandler in friends’ view on a cigarette: “…it is an extension of your hand.” This is how product designers ought to be thinking of their products. It is an extension of your hand that is used every day. It is a tool of the trade. Take some pride in your product.
If this mouse is as good as it looks, Apple will have nailed it again. First, their iPod with the revolutionary clickwheel came out and revolutionized the mp3 player world. Now, the Mighty Mouse comes out and hopefully (fingers crossed) it will do the same. Here’s to Apple, cheers!
p.s. I don’t care what you Microsoft junkies say. This mouse is better than anything you have designed.

anything we personally have designed? or anything microsoft has ever designed? because that’s flawed on both fronts due to the fact that:
microsoft’s control of the PC mice market is a small fraction of the entire mouse market, logitech has a pretty large hold on that. i think microsoft mice are clunky sacks of shit, personally.
or i hope you weren’t saying “better than what you could design”, because that’s the worst logic ever. i can’t play guitar or write music, but that doesn’t make nickleback a good band.
if apple is good at anything, it’s spin. before this mouse, they touted the one button mouse as a feature, it’s less confusing, you don’t have that wacky second button getting all up in your shit. the same way that apple used the idea of randomly playing an mp3s as an amazing new feature. life is random, i think was their slogan.
reguardless, the whole mac vs. pc thing is largely retarded. do what you need to do, just don’t get smug about the operating system on your computer. i use pc because it has the programs i need, and due to the larger user base, i can get those programs through widespread piracy. it reminds me of when josh went from his 8 year old sack of shit PC to a brand new mini-mac and started acting all mac elitist, like “well my new mac is sooo much better than my old pc”. i’d hope so, josh, new things tend to be better.
either way, i’m done. and i heart rogie.
the biggest thing i love about apple is not found in purely apple products. i am not a mac elitist, instead i am a mac appreciator. to say that mac is the best WOULD be stupid. we all know that gaming on a mac is not the best experience, just due to the fact that a very limited number of games are created for them.
Apple does some things worse than microsoft, i.e. single button mouse. However, I feel that this mouse, if it is good as well as products like the OLD alienware and voodooPC’s are straight up bitchin’. It is a product that a user can have pride in.
I’m somehow convinced that having a “touch-sensitive shell” is a bad idea. How sensitive are we speaking? Is it designed for old ladies with Parkinsons, or for football players who can mash uncooked potatos in their meaty fists? Sure, it looks attractive and streamlined, but how does it feel when you’re putting it to a 10 hour work day in the office? Or a harsh game of Counter-Strike (or whatever shit the kids are playing these days. I’m so out of touch.)
The 360 degree roller thingie is a nice touch, assuming it locks into 90 degrees without freaking out. See also anlog sticks on video game controllers. I hate those fucking things.
I dunno, I’ve always liked Apple’s dedication to design with function, but they’ve been taking shit too far lately. (See also Cody’s note on the iPod Shuffle. Fuck random. If I want random, I’ll put my Creative Zen on random mode for a few hours before going back to *gasp* playlists. OMG, multifunctionality? Who knew?)
Oh yeah, and I bet the white finish gets gunked pretty quick. Hands are filthy. That thing’s gonna be yellow and brown/gray in no time.
But hey, maybe it’ll spur Logitech and whoever to make better products to compete. Competition is good!
Competition is good nem. Thanks for dropping by! I try to check your site out every once and awhile as you see I have a link to you. However, I am not as respectful a reader as you. I haven’t commented on your blog at all.
I think you are right on about Cody’s comment about the random. Its like they were sitting there and the designers were saying, man we still need to get a hundred bucks out of these things, but we aren’t allowed to put a screen on it. However, as you will notice, Cody sports his with pride. Not Apple pride, Cody pride. The sort of pride that says, “I bought this, therefore it is good. No its not that the company that made it is a good company, but the fact that I bought it made it good.”
Funny thing about Apple. I see your point in the fact that they are beautiful, yet maybe they won’t stand the test of time. For instance, I have a Powerbook G4 ( titanium ) and it is all scratched up and is starting to look like crap. Used to be beautiful, NOT NOW. But, I will say that this thing has held up almost 3 years of 8+ hours a day use and many a falls on the ground.
Who knows how this product will handle, but I’m putting my chips in and saying that its gonna rock. :]
mac = f33g. m$ = whore. whatever, I know all my shit works with m$ so i’ll stay a whore until Valve starts developing for *nix… oh and macromedia, adobe, epic and the rest :) fuck yo couch nukka!
your language is unacceptable pain. i will boot thee if it continues.
hah… like i give a fauk about ur language quotas. Kick me if you like. No skin of my scr0t! f333333333333333333333333333333333333333g! I love you.
I dont why all you like this mouse. I dont think it is near the mices made by Logitech. Take a look at the new mices from Logitech:

There are way better than that Mighty Mouse.
adi,
i have the logitech mx1000 laser mouse at my work. that mouse, i think is so dang cool. it is very precise and fast. it is cordless and works for gaming beautifully. I have heard a few people say that it is too sensitive. Personally, I think that that is a bunch of crap. I think that if that mouse is too sensitive to you, the problem is that your arm/hand is too slow at communicating to your brain. You have bigger problems.
That being said, I’m anxious to see what this minimalist mouse can do for me. With the introduction of the iPod mini and the new minimalist navigation, I feel that Apple nailed it. I think that this mouse with either be genius or be a complete pile. We’ll see. Now if Logitech or Apple wants to throw a free mx100 or mighty mouse at me, I’ll do a complete review on it for free.
Peace :)
Razor has a new 2000 dpi mouse. PWN. f’apple
Damn, that Logitech mouse looks nice. Wonder if I can convince my new boss to shell out 99 bucks on one? I think our purchasing card is active now.
Mmm, I smell a field trip to Staples…
nem0, do it DO it. I just convinced my boss that I needed a highly sensitive mouse for Macromedia Fireworks. Just throw him a line that vector art requires a steady hand or some crap like that and that you MUST have one for your work to be top notch. What boss wouldn’t want top notch work?
Nobody wants to be second best, do they.
Personally, I prefer to actually click something in. I can’t stand Mac mouses.

I am happy for those people who have bought any Apple, and are impressed by their machine. Also for those who voted for G.W. Bush, but that’s another story.
I – made the great mistake – of buying an Apple G5 in December 2005, and it has caused me constant nightmares. It is slow, relative to a Intel based machine of the same price, I have had to surrender A LOT of functinality, and trying to find out how to use it, has been extremely time consuming, relative to a Windows platform. I feel that I have wasted US$2000, and have warned my friends about making the same stupid mistake, which I have made.
David M. Murphy.
David, I’ll trade you my PC for your G5 you hate. Deal?
I am so happy! I love all the world! Life is beautiful!
