The Story
In the Bible in Daniel Chapter 1, it speaks of Daniel, Ananias, Misael, and Azarias, the children of Israel. These young men were “well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, acute in knowledge, and instructed in science” and there “was no blemish” in them. They were brought into the King’s palace by the chief eunuch to teach the King the learning of the tounge of the Chaldeans after the King of Babylon beseiged Jerusalem.
Now that you have a little backstory, let me get to my point. Daniel and his buddies didn’t want to be defiled by the King’s food and his wine, therefore he conducted a little challenge. His little game to avoid the defiling meat and wine was slick. He suggested that rather than the rich foods of meat and wine of the King’s table, that he and his buddies eat pulse and water for 10 days and see who was healthier. Pulse by webster’s definition is: the edible seeds of various leguminous crops (as peas, beans, or lentils). Malasar, the chief of the eunuch was afraid because he knew that if the King noticed that Daniel and his buddies were leaner ( in that day that meant unhealthier ) than his men, he would suspect ill treating of these fine men. Malasar, in spite of a possible death wish decided to trust Daniel in his plan.
The Bible tells us that “after ten days, their faces appeared fairer and fatter than all the children that ate of the king’s meat.”
The Diet
Now, my goal is not to be fatter than the rich food eaters, but it is to be healthier and also fairer. I propose a little game. This game was called The Rice Diet, but has now been added to include beans aka pulse for protein. I propose that for 14 days, I eat nothing but pulse for lack of a better word. The diet is simple and whoever joins me is required to check in every day for 14 days and comment on this blog on how things are going.
Now, you may be asking “what can I drink?.” I’m sure that you don’t want to drink just water, so I have modified this diet to include natural type beverages. Basically, knock the sugary drinks out such as soda and you’ll be adhering to the diet. Personally, I still plan on sucking back my fair share of the sludge I call coffee, so you can do as you will, but NO soda!

Do you not remember the 2 weeks we did without coffee? This is worse Logie! No Windbag french fries, no chocolate, no Toi’s Thai, etc. I don’t know what’s going on in your crazy head, trying to prep yourself for some Surivivor?
J
Quite possibly James. Actually, the idea came about during watching survivor last night. Very similar to the 2 weeks without coffee, this one’s gonna hurt. In fact, I am sitting next to my brown rice and pinto beans.
Ohh, and by the way, I am checking in. Day one of the pulse diet. Luckily I have had no cravings yet, so I’m doin good :)
Jamie, does this mean you are in?
Rogie… Count me in!
Lala
I am in…gonna go find beans and rice for lunch right now! The OX has’em…I will just have them modify for me!
That is HIPOCLITICAL! Coffee but no soda… lame-o. I will eat raw meat and my 2-liter of soda and still be lean…. however, my farts do stink alot more lately.
FYI… i r eating Hostess powdered donettes and a 1 Liter of Coke. In about, ohhhhh, 5 minutes, i’m going to go have a cigarette too.
Ok, first round of beans n’ rice. I am doing brown rice and straight up pinto beans. Not bad!, but a little bland.
Ok, I had white rice with soy sauce and pepper…not too shabby! No beans yet…just wanted rice…OH, I had some hot tea too.
Question:
If we can use hot sauces and such…why would tomato juice be bad? Not saying the whole tomat, just the tomato juice. You could use it for many mexican dishes without using really anything but Beans, Rice, and seasoning..just asking.
Also, I have found many great recipes, and for an idea, I thought that you could put the veggies in a cheese cloth to boil with the beans for flavor and then remove for the pure bean experience. That way it feels like you have all these things there, but it really is just beans in a broth or having taken on a fuller flavor! The same could work with the rice also.
I’m thinkin juices are good. Its not like we are limiting ourselves from drinking orange juice or tomato juice, so the whole tomato juice bit sounds great.
U know, I used to live in Hawaii, and everyone ate rice… guess what… everyone there was fat too. Coincidence? I think not. I would stay away from the carbs if I were you, esp. after 4pm.
On survivor they mainly eat rice and sometimes beans. They lose a ton of weight! Chris, I think that your point is ill and uninformed. Also, you just attacked all of Hawaii and that was not too nice :(
so.. wow … no beans; no rice YET.. but i cant wait to get home and have some.. altho im doing quite well with lotsa water and pineapple peach mango 100% juice. (but see rogie told me about this challenge only today.. so I’m alittle behind the game.. but im still suited up to play!)
L4L4
Hmmm…. you are basing your arguments off of Survivor? Ok, you win.
oh honey i’m so not in thanks for the offer though this girls curves are staying curvy…i e my no coffee bitch was nothing compared to the rice and beans only bitka that could come out. Also keep in mind this means no alcohol (Yager) on your boys night out. MWHAHAHA
oh by the by Rogie…remember our alphabet diet :)
Jager is made from the broth of roots and spices…not meat or any of that other crap…broth is good. As for the Red Bull that may also be consumed…we decided that for one night…it is a carbonated beverage made up with natural herbs and spices and extract of sugar cane, not a soft drink. So there! :-P
In the eternal words of Sir Mix Alot…
A word to my big soul sistas…red beans and rice did miss ya!
I think that I can do it…..I am after all, half been anyways!!!
Hmm. I wouldn’t be able to drop the coke out of my life. I’m in process of drinking more coffee and less coke, but sometimes in the afternoon I just want a cup of ice cold coca-cola.
Ok, cheated a wee bit this weekend with Nachos…but I did eat the black beans with the chips, and I split a half order with someone. I have not had any soda though! I am back on the wagon now…YAH MULE, YAH,YAH!
I.. alas.. gave in. With my usual hectic routine of everyday life and the workout regime i’ve been keeping up with, I just can’t seem to part with so many calories. I broke.. i had yin yang shrimp from jade garden! OOOOOOO but it was sooooo good. But I did make sure that rice accompanied it ;)
So anyways.. I will try to add atleast some rice or beans at my meals, I just dont think that physcially right now I can go on just those two.
~by the way.. i just have to state that I love old men in suspenders!
HAHA..
Cheers to the day!
Well, as usual I start something…my friends jump on board, and I am the only one to actually complete it. I have not touched anything except rice and legumes. You guys cut me deep :(
Yall are nuts, or beans have gone to your head. No offence Fooch (where the hell you bean). If any of you die, can I have your stuff, I need that in writting by the way. It’s been all I can do to just give up soda and replace it with coffee.
Caffine is my master, all others shall bow.
I have coffee…it is technically a broth made from beans…not too dumb here! I actully had coffee for lunch today!
“Another legend gives us the name for coffee or “mocha.” An Arabian was banished to the desert with his followers to die of starvation. In desperation, Omar had his friends boil and eat the fruit from an unknown plant. Not only did the broth save the exiles, but their survival was taken as a religious sign by the residents of the nearest town, Mocha. The plant and its beverage were named Mocha to honor this event.” – http://www.telusplanet.net/public/coffee/history.htm
very nice legend Cory. I have not messed with the diet yet and I am staying strong. For lunch and dinner I had white rice and black beans. Ohh boy the gas is comin’ strong though!
I take offense! you are not always the only one to complete it, when we did the coffee I did as well. Yep apology awaiting…..
Ohhh my gosh, I am soooo sorry Jamie. You deserve my complete apologies a thousand times over. I guess when you get cut so deep, you don’t really realize that there are others that have gone through the pain with you as well. Sorry :(
As for the diet, my stomach is grumbling and I am gassy. However, I feel pretty good. I feel lighter and I think I may have lost a couple of pounds. I’ll have to check on that, but I want to wait for a week to weigh in.
For now, peace out!
Ok, so I am not so good with the diet
Cory, good defense. Honestly, I never thought that a guilt trip would make you loathe yourself and wallow in self-pity, as I see that it has NOT done! I just wanted to take a stab at you cuz it was easier when I thought someone else was on board, as was the case in the caffeine battles with James.
As for sodas, I have had none. As for coffee, I’m down to about 1/3 of what I normally drink.
Good for you man! I am still on board…but I have taken a couple detours. If you are looking to lose weight…sure you can do a drastic diet for a while…but it really will depend on a lifestyle change. I guess that is the angle I am taking. I know it wasn’t the original idea…but I will try to make a concerted effort.
xoxoxoxo!!
36hrs and goin strong since I cheated! I eyed the red bull last night and even this morning for a quick energy fix, but stayed strong, I drank water and now have a SOBE. Ate rice, peanuts, and a couple dried peas. . . I hate peas! I now know why sailors thought the Manatee was a beautiful mermaid!LOL! But I am not even close to the “you got a purdy mouth” stage of an inmate yet!
Peace and snoogins!
i r quit teh soda… baby steps ed, baby steps
I am not only on beans and rice, but I am also doing the Supermodel Diet too, and for those of you who know me…you KNOW I am supermodel material!
Anyhoo, enough about me, but let’s talk about what I DO when I don’t want beans and rice…I do the Supermodel thing and I have coffee and cigarettes.
I know what you are thinking…
“How can he do so many healthy things all at once?”
Well, let me tell ya, it isn’t easy! Between the constant eye twitches, bouncy leg, and tensed up back muscles, I have got to burn some mad calories! I can chew through a package of peanuts like a squirrel on speed; all that mastication has got to be a big use of energy also. Have you tried eating rice with chopsticks? That is an exercise in futility, but for every kernel of rice that makes it to your mouth…you will have needed to eat 19 to use the sticks and balance that one MF’n kernel on your stick while trying to lift it up to you mouth all with the caffeine shakes. AND THEN you know you have to chew 32 times! After about 45 minutes and you are able to eat a good 15 kernels, you just want to go and have a smoke (Even non-smokers have vouched for this method!) I ordered a pint of rice a week ago
Ok, I am really really hungry tonight. I had some extra rice and soy sauce, but this diet is getting really really tough.
Ok, back on my feet again, and I am ready to go. I have a ton of energy and I am ready to hit this day on full force. Funny thing, I actually feel thinner and I feel better than usual.
I haven’t been drinking as much coffee either, more juices n water n such. Also, I have been watching an increased amount of Star Trek: TNG movies and TV episodes. Maybe all this rice and beans business is a crock and its just the Star Trek. Hmmm….a very interesting thought to ponder…..I will ponder.
As for Cory, you sound like you are high as a kite on your coffee buzz with all this banter about twitching and eating rice one capsule(?) at a time. Man, get some rest and slow it up on the java. Whoa boy…whoa.
Judging by the frequency of Cory and Lala’s comments, I’m gonna go ahead and say you guys have really dropped the ball. I’ll bet you are eating a cheeseburger right now.
Hey man,
Doin alright. Not as hardcore as you, but good! Still haven’t had a soda in over a week. Just don’t have internet at home…and got busy here at work…not too much time to chat.
Beautiful weblog !!! Great!
And this is for my textarea.
I am having my first soda since February 23rd. Today is April 12th. Not too shabby. Just really tired and need the caffeine and sugar rush to get through the afternoon! Wish I had carrot sticks instead.
I haven’t had soda since lent started. I crave them bad when we go out to eat.
Hi!
I just came across your site. Thought it was interesting. I did something similiar during the month of June. Started June 1 and lost 22 lbs as of July 1. I ate rice (basmati with a smidge of butter for flavor) and fruit for all my meals and drank only water. ( I don’t drink soda or coffee, so that was no sacrifice!) I have now added veggies , so I will see how that goes over the next month. I will definitly be checking to see how it goes with all of you. I know it is hard, but keep up the good work
I just went back and read when the last entry was published. Ooops! I don’t think anyone is reading this site anymore.
where do i see the diet?
how many times can i have my meal? rice and pulse?
Hi! Very nice site! Thanks you very much! WjcScRRSpfgK1
I have eaten a pulse diet. It really means a vegetarian diet. I eat my friuts and nuts in the morning ( a bowl of bananas, oranges, pineapple, apple, watermelon, grapes, honey dew and cantaloupe mixed with coconut, and 2-3 of the following nuts (only 3 times a week) brazilian, macadamian, almond, hazelnut, pecan, walnut and also about a teaspoon of the following seeds, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, and last but not least grounded flaxseed. Yes it looks very good when you are eating all of these things together and it is. I ate this every morning but of course you can’t eat the nuts every morning because to many nuts is bad for you.
Any way I would then eat a vegetarian dish for lunch and in between meals I would have only warm water, (it goes through faster which means you get hydrated faster but you are to have your water about an hour after you eat so as no to pollute your water, don’t drink juice cause it will start up you digestion all over again.) I eat 2 meals a day and water in between, I am 28 years old and before I did this diet I looked about 23 years old but after the diet my friends and family that had not seen me for a month or two could not believe how young I looked to then I looked like a teen. They asked me what I was eating. And so I told them about the pulse diet that I do in the morning. And the vegetarian dish for lunch, and the water in between meals. Try it! Also try to sleep by 10:30 but that is another story on melatonin. Email me if you have any questions. if you want to hear about Daniel 2 look up this website
