Hud, a Growl theme by Komodo

For those of us using a Mac, Growl should essentially be shipped with the system. For years it’s worked wonders as being a perfect central notification system for any and all system events. From new emails to a Skype message to an upload-just-finished status notification, Growl is a great way to keep me updated.

As great as Growl is, I wanted a new theme. Since Growl themes are webkit and CSS2/3 based, I figured what the heck, I’ll make one of my own. Best news is I’m making it publicly available for you too!

Head on over to the downloads section to download it!

I captured the Growl notification above against Shaun Inman’s Twitter background. So pixelly and delicious :)

    Pretty good.

As Phil said, it looks a lot like Mono: http://fixedgear.ca/

I would’ve liked to of seen you use some webkit animations like Basics.

  8. Rogie said 1152 days ago

    Matt,

You’ll notice a few distinct differences from Mono like a subtle pulsing glow and both a glow and drop shadow on the notification to make it stand out against both light and dark backgrounds alike.

In addition, you’ll see Hud is a glossy and top-center lighting effected glass container as opposed to Mono.

No matter the differences, they are similar indeed, I’m sure both inspired by Apple’s video player control.

I love it but would love it even more if the size was adjustable like Smoke.

Love the HUD Growl style. Thank you for sharing. How difficult was it for you to create this? I have tried to make a custom Growl theme in the past, but not successful. Thank you again for sharing!

Sorry, maybe I should of said that clearer. I wasn’t saying that it was a bad thing that it looked similar to Mono. I love the Mono Theme and after using Hud, I think I might have to switch. So, great work :)

Wait, are you sure you didn’t copy my Noir style? It looks almost identical. Take a look:

    Hey there,really like this theme.
But I do have a problem with this: After installing it, Growl preferences won’t load up.. I need to cut the theme file out of my growl folder in order to get it loading. tried to rename but nothing. Any idea?

  16. mpschuetze said 1152 days ago

    hey there, got it, nevermind!
It’s a problem of ‘Rucksack’, instead of extracting the zip file you provided, it just removes the ‘.zip’ ending :/ Thank you for this awesome theme! :)

I was using Mono, but I just switched to this. It’s a bit long for many notifications, but I rather like it.

It’s inspired me to give making my own a shot.

Been using this for a couple of days now Rogie, and it is the best growl theme i’ve ever used. I have been looking for a decent theme for ages, smokey was the best I found.

This one just takes the trophy!

Hi Rogie, do you know why the mouseover animations do not work? It doesn’t work with my theme either, it’s really annoying me :(

    Thanks for this cool button!

Hi Rogie, This theme is great! Just one thing, is there any way to move it off the right edge slightly? Currently it’s right against the side of my screen.

This is absolutely amazing – love the style. Moderately related question, though: what’s the wallpaper shown in the second screenshot? I’d love to use it.

    Thanks!

Everytime I reinstall OS X (yes… it happens) this is one of the first customizations I install.

A big THUMBS UP to you Rogie!!

I’ve modified this theme a little bit, mainly added an animation on appearance. It looks pretty cool when you try it.

I really love the Theme, but I would really enjoy that the button to delecte a notification (this: http://d.pr/cc0z) looks a little bit better.
